Penelope is an Adjunct Research Associate of Charles Sturt University, Australia. She lives in Tauranga and more recently has curated exhibitions for the National Army Museum, Waiouru, and the New Zealand Portrait Gallery, Wellington.

What to expect:

  1. Unpackaging the Picture: showcasing the tools for looking at and analysing an artwork using a wide range of artworks from the local to the international and the historical to contemporary.

  2. Women and Art: the depiction of women in artwork through time, and how they have been represented, and how that has changed, as well as the female artists, their work, and reception.

  3. Collections and Exhibitions: a discussion of how collections are developed both at home and abroad, as well as considering the backstories to curating exhibitions.

  4. Art and Crime: art history is not always a pretty picture. Often referred to as the ‘dark side’, art crime captures fraud, theft and vandalism. A relatively new discipline, art crime has been excluded from mainstream art histories and yet, is very much part of the art world.
