These workshops are held in response to Ethel Mcmillan's (1920 -1949) intimate watercolour studies. Five of Ethel’s watercolours are displayed in Tauranga Moana Waterscapes: 1800s – Present. Ethel was a well-known Tauranga resident with a passion for painting the local landscape. Several of her watercolours are now held in the Tauranga City Library Archive Collection.
Deb Clarke is a passionate watercolour artist who paints contemporary realism. She has pursued an online training process, with tutors and art mentors around the globe. She often attends online workshops in the small hours of the night when painting with a Russian, American or European group of artists to match their time zone.
Her favourite subjects are large florals which she loves to paint ‘up close and personal’, representing the heart of each bloom in vibrant transparent colours or moody subtle shades depending on the subject. Birds and wildlife also feature in many of her paintings. Deb loves to capture the essence of a flower or the character of a bird or creature by enhancing their colours, depicting the sun on a petal or a glint in the eye of a cheeky tui.
During the seven years she has been painting, Deb has enjoyed success with her artwork in local and international competitions- Winning the coveted Trustpower Supreme Award in 2019 and 2020; Finalist in the BOP-wide Miles Awards; Several People’s Choice Awards in Tauranga Society of Artists Expos and Watercolour New Zealand Winter competition and an Honourable Mention in International competition – Women in Watercolour.
Deb is now teaching Watercolour Discovery classes weekly to members of Tauranga Society of Artists where she is the current President.
