Film screening – Suspiria (1977)
Suspiria is a cult horror classic directed by Dario Argento, written by Argento and his frequent collaborator Daria Nicolodi, and partially based on Thomas De Quincey's 1845 essay Suspiria de Profundis. The film stars Jessica Harper, Stefania Casini, Alida Valli, Udo kier, and Joan Bennet. Probably the most famous of Argento's films, Suspiria is widely known for its dazzling technicolour cinematography, surreal set design and the evocative soundtrack by progressive rock band Goblin.
Tauranga Art Gallery Toi Tauranga screens Suspiria (1977) to coincide with Turmeke Harrington's exhibition Massive Props. The exhibition uses two elements that relate to the horror film genre. The colour pink is often characterised as a 'soft' and feminine colour. For Harrington, pink is also visceral, associated with birth and 'pink mist', a euphemism for dramatic blood sprays in the film. Within Massive Props we, the audience, are also being watched another trope of the horror film genre and one that reoccurs throughout Suspiria (1977). Come and feast your senses on a gruesome yet poetic horror film surrounded by the watchful eyes of Turumeke Harrington’s wall sculptures.
